Networking Lunch - Conversations with
Scientists As in previous workshops, the lunch plays an important part
in the workshop. The idea of the lunch is to give the workshop participants an
opportunity to network with distinguished mathematicians and invited SIAM
members. At lunch, participants will be seated in small groups (tables of
8-10), to encourage conversation. The topics discussed in previous lunches
covered a wide range of topics, for example, What courses should I
take?, Why should I get a Ph.D.?, and What's it like to
be an applied mathematician in industry?
Evening Session - Food for Thought An informal evening
session will be held, to provide an opportunity for students to discuss frankly
their professional and personal experiences. In previous meetings, this session
brought together distinguished mathematicians from academia and industry who
gave a perspective on what it is like to be a minority mathematician and what
types of rewards and problems the students could expect as they progress
through their professional careers. This year's program will feature breakout
groups to discuss various topics of interest to students.
Field Trip to SDSC Join us on an exciting tour of the San Diego Supercomputer
Center. Transportation will be provided for all students to an
from the conference hotel. A bus will leave from the hotel at 5:30
sharp. This event will begin with a reception at the San Diego
Computer Center starting at 6:00, and followed by a short talk from
Bob Leary, Senior Staff Scientist on Global Optimization of Atomic
Clusters via Basin-hopping. Short tours of the computer center will
be given after the talks for all those interested.
This event is being graciously supported by the San Diego
Supercomputer Center and the National
Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure
